With Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea already through to the next round, five other teams are looking to secure their place among the last 16 tonight.

In Group E Roma will host last year’s runner up Bayern Munich. The Italians will progress if they win and Basel and Cluj draw their match in Switzerland, while Louis van Gaal’s men secure first place if they avoid a defeat bigger than 0-2.

Decider in Moscow
Chelsea are already through from Group F and will probably secure first place in the group when Zilina visit Stamford Bridge. The really exciting fixture in this group, though, takes place in Moscow where Spartak Moscow and Olympique de Marseille, both leveled at six points, will battle out for second place in an early kick off. For Spartak any win will do, while Marseille are through with any other win than 1-0.

Help from Mourinho
José Mourinho and Real Madrid are through to next round after a late equaliser at San Siro last matchday. This time, however, the Rossoneri will be hoping for some help from the Spanish giants in their quest to progress from Group G. Milan need a win away at Auxerre and Real Madrid to beat Ajax to make sure of a place in the last 16.

Arsenal the key
In Group H Arsenal will join the last 16 if they avoid defeat at Braga and could be joined by Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian side will take their place in the play-offs with a win at Partizan Beograd, anticipated that Braga fail to beat the Gunners. Should Arsenal win, a draw will do for Shakhtar.

Which teams do you think will make it to the last 16?

Derby della Maddonina

Milan

There’s plenty at stake when the 157th Derby della Maddonina between Inter and AC Milan kicks off at the Guiseppe Meazza Sunday evening.

The historic rivalry between the two Milano clubs has reached new heights after Inter, led by José Mourinho, won everything last season, at the same time surpassing their city rivals in number of Italian league titles, Coppa Italia titles and becoming the first Italian side to win the Treble. With the Nerazurri also achieving a league double over their rivals, AC Milan are looking for revenge. They have bolstered their squad with some real offensive talent, and so far things are looking good.

Team news; Inter
The home side will be without right-back Maicon as they are looking for their first win in three matches after two consecutive 1-1 draws. Though, they will probably welcome back both goalkeeper Julio Cesar and veteran Dejan Stankovic. Influential playmaker Wesley Sneijder should also be ok and set to make the lineup after fainting (!) at half-time in last weekends draw with Brescia.

The stat: Inter have only scored five goals in their last seven league outings and have only won one league match this season with more than one goal.

Is it possible that Inter will fail to score against The Rossoneri?

AC Milan
The Rossoneri sit at top of the table having picked up 23 points after 11 rounds, three more than fourth placed Inter. Allegri’s men have won six of their last league encounters, with the only defeat coming at home to Juventus, and are now looking to extend their lead at the top. They will, however, have to cope without their top scorer Alexandre Pato who’s suffering from a tigh injury, but Alessandro Pirlo should be back after being rested in the 3-1 midweek win over Palermo. Defenders Gianluca Zambrotta and Daniele Bonera are though likely to miss the tie.

The stat: Milan haven’t won the Milan derby with Inter as the home team since February 2005.

Will Milan pick up their first ”away” win againt their rivals in five years?

Manchester Derby; Bigger and Better

-Manchester-United-v-Manc-001

Ever since Sheik Mansour stepped in as the new owner of Manchester City the importance of the Manchester derby has grown. For the first time in many, many years the two clubs are now bitter rivals.

And also, for the first time since the 1960’s both clubs are serious title contenders. Therefore, tonights game is one of the biggest games in England, if not the biggest. It will be fierce competion both on and off the field as The Citizens take on their red rivals for the 157th Manchester derby at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Fancy a bet on the game? Check out or odds here!

Big expectations

Man City are currently three points behind United, getting a win away to Midlands side West Bromwich this weekend after losing two Premiership games in a row. Confidence will no doubt be back in the locker room and The Blues, who are currently tied for a 3rd spot will be looking to eliminate the gap to their city rivals with a derby win.

However, they have to overcome a United side which they haven’t beat in the Premier League since they took a derby double in 2007/2008. Still expectations are running high amongst Roberto Mancini’s men, with Man City fielding their best side in decades, perhaps ever.

In form United hit by injuries

United have won six in a row in all competitions and are keen to build up on their supremacy as the best club in town. However, Sir Alex Ferguson may have to do with out several key members of his squad in the Manchester derby due to injuries and sickness. Wayne Rooney, Owen Hargreaves and veteran Ryan Giggs are definitely out, while Nani, Dimitar Berbatov, Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all remain doubtfull. Most of them, though, will propably be available to play. But will they be in the proper shape for a game like this?

Probable Lineups

Man City: Hart – Zabaleta, Toure, Kompany, Boateng – de Jong, Barry – Toure Yaya – Milner, Tevez, Silva.

Man Utd: van der Saar – O’Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra – Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Park – Hernandez, Berbatov.

Uruguay – Germany

Posted 2010/07/10 in Preview

This is it! The game for the third place in World Cup 2010! Almost the most important match in the tournament. Who is more determined to get the bronze? Uruguay or Germany?

uruger

Uruguay – Germany 4,50 3,65 1,79

Not on this place…
I’m sure that nobody expected to see these teams in the World Cup “little final”. Uruguay was supposed to be eliminated from WC long ago, while Germany after great victories over England and Argentina was going to play in the great Final. What will be the best – great enthusiasm in Uruguay, that they have reached so much or big frustration and determination from Germany, born from disappointment that they’re not playing for gold?

Who is better?
It’s hard to pick a big favorite here. In any other situation it will with no doubts be Germany. But I think that Joachim Loew will give a chance to participate in the World Cup to all players who haven’t played yet or to players who played only few minutes. To not play for gold is already a big loss for them and this game don’t have to be so important. What about Uruguay? They will give their hearts and will do everything to stand on the lower step of the podium. It’s very important game for them. Prove? In the semi final Oscar Taberez substituted Diego Forlan to give him chance to get a rest before this match.

But I think that Germany is stronger team anyway. Thomas Muller will be back in the starting “11″. Miroslav Klose will play for sure, if he only be fit, cause it can be his last chance to beat Ronaldo’s goal record. Schweinsteiger is irreplaceable in the middle of the pitch… Even return of Luis Suarez and Jorge Fucile will probably not be enough.

Time for a win
After eight previous meetings between these teams the goal difference is 23 to 5 in German favor. Six wins and two draws for the European team is a great run. Last game, in 1993, it ended 5-0. But everything has an end. Time for first victory? Germany have played four times in the World Cup third-place match and won three of them, while Uruguay have played two times for bronze and have lost both matches. One of these meetings was in World Cup 1970 where West Germany defeated Uruguay 1-0.

It´s time for a rematch of the European final from 2008: Germany vs. Spain. But will the result be the same (Spain won 1-0) and will Fernando Torres end his goaldrought?

geresp

Germany – Spain 2.80 3.15 2.63

Germany manage perfect without Ballack

Many were sceptical to Germany´s chances in the World Cup after the injury of star Michael Ballack before the games starts, but the Germans have risen to the occasion and played better than ever impressing more and more critics.

Schweinsteiger is in charge of the German midfield, Klose keeps on scoring and the rising stars like Müller and Özil have proven their talent.

Villa chasing records – Torres on a rerun

Spain won the European championship after beating Germany 1-0 in the final.

Finally the Spaniards seem to have put the previous World Cup-curses behind them. After losing their first game against Switzerland, they have four consecutive wins. And this without a single goal from superstar Fernando Torres and very little action from Cesc Fabregas. This only proves that Spain has even more to go on.

On Wednesday the stage is set for a clash of titans, or as Andres Iniesta says:

- Germany have had a brilliant World Cup so far. But we too are at the top of our game. I think it will be a great game.

The question remains if Fernando Torres will have the chance of repeating his triumph from the 2008-final. The Liverpool-striker has substituted from the latest games, receiving massive critics from all the experts.

David Villa has scored 43 goals for Spain, only one behind Rauls record of 44 goals. The question is no longer whether Villa will break this record, but whether it will happen in this World Cup.

Injuries and suspensions

Germany will have to manage without Thomas Müller, something coach Joachim Low isnt too happy with.

- The fact that we won´t have him is a serious blow because he has shown how dangerous he is.

Spain managed to stay clear of any booking or sending-offs, leaving their opponents with 10 booking and one red card… They have only three players with one booking in the play-offs so far, meaning no suspensions.

Selected odds:

Fernando Torres to score: 6.50

Spain to beat Germany 1-0: 7.50

Spain to reach the final: 1.80

Wesley Sneijder is the best Dutch goal scorer with 4 goals

6th of July 2010 at 20.30 CET, Uruguay – Netherlands 6.40 3.45 1.65

Played in Cape Town at Green Point Stadium

The Dutch team had an amazing win against Brazil in the quarterfinals, while Uruguay beat Ghana after penalty kicks and a peculiar experience with missed and canceled penalty kicks, and not to mention the most obvious foul committed in the box without the referee seeing it.

“Oranje” is clearly the favorite in this semifinal and maybe the biggest favorite ever in World Cup history. They are playing strongly with a good organization and great offensive skill.

Uruguay is defending with 8 players and are relying on Forlan and Suarez to make the goals, but because of life changing save on the goal line Suarez is in the penalty box in this game. Forlan will stand alone and it will be to tough a task even for him.

It has been 30 years since they have met and Uruguay won, but this time I’m quite sure that the “oranje” colors will dominate and win this one quite easy.

Injuries and quarantines

Nigel de Jong and Gregory van der Wiel from the Netherlands are suspended.

Jorge Fucile and Luis Suarez from Uruguay are suspended. And Nicolas Lodeiro is out of the World Cup cause of a mayor injury.

Selected odds

Netherlands will win with at least 3 goals (-2), odds 5.80

Netherlands to win 4-0, odds 32.00

Netherlands will progress to the final, odds 1.26

Spain is big favorites in this quaterfinal. The win against Portugal gave them a lot of confidence. Paraguay on the other hand didn’t score against Japan and had to win on penalties, the underdogs will probably need to score this time.
